New Ruby Gem Paves Way For Future of Web Development
Today I was scanning my del.icio.us links and came across an amazing new gem for Ruby on Rails called Hobo. It promises to be an “open-source extension to Ruby on Rails which helps you build full blown web applications incredibly quickly and easily.” And, let me tell you, it’s pure genius.
Rails itself is a layer built on-top of the Ruby programming language that offers an “open-source web framework that’s optimized for programmer happiness and sustainable productivity.” It’s the perfect foundation for laying another layer on-top. The Hobo People realized this and decided to build Hobo on-top of Rails.
Now that I’ve spent time programming with Hobo, I know I can never go back to programming without a Hobo. In fact, I have begun active development on the next evolution in web programming. I’m building my own layer to go on top of Hobo’s layer on top of Rails. It’s called Hobo Under Bridges. By utilizing a layer on top of Hobo’s layer on top of Rails, I can take advantage of the hard work that Hobo did to take advantage of the hard work that Rails did to take advantage of the Ruby programming language.
But this is just the beginning. My ultimate goal is to continue building layer upon layer until Rails is completely buried. Now that’s a framework I can get on board with.
