How to install Google +1 button for pages (but should you?)

Webmasters can now add +1 to their website.

The implementation is very simple. Paste a line of JavaScript inside the HEAD and paste another line of code where you want the button to appear.

<!-- Place this tag in your head or just before your close body tag -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js"></script>

<!-- Place this tag where you want the +1 button to render -->
<g:plusone></g:plusone>

There are some advanced options, including the ability to specify the URL you want +1’d. That’s helpful if you want to place the button throughout your site, but have it only apply to your home page. If you want to have even more control over the button, you can use their +1 button API.

Should you use +1 for your website?

When visitors plusone a page, it can influence the search results experienced by their social friends. For example, when I do a search for bacon explosion it displays at least one person I know who has +1’d a related result.

In addition, results that have been +1’d, but don’t typically appear on the first page of the SERPs, may appear at the bottom of the first page (and possibly further up on the page).

Google has stated that plusone will affect ranking results, but to what extent is unknown. I still contend that it will be a small factor, and that you won’t need it in order to rank well in the SERPs. Instead, it will be most powerful in social circles, similar to how Facebook’s Like button works. By design, it will get your +1’d content in front of more friends, who will then plusone it and passively share with their friends, and so on.

So should you use +1 on your website? My answer is this:

If you want to increase exposure to your site in the same way Facebook Social Plugins can, then you should probably consider it. However, if you want to use it so you can have a big advantage in the organic ranking results (sans friends), you’re probably wasting your time.
