Did “Time Machine” Used to Be Called “Time Tunnel?”

I stumbled upon a strange link on Apple’s website. While checking out the new features of Leopard’s Mail.app — http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/mail.html — I clicked on the Time Machine link at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the link took me to a 404 page. I went back to inspect the link and strangely enough, it was linked to http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/timetunnel.html.

This immediately made me think that Time Machine may have originally been called Time Tunnel. I did some more digging around and found out that Apple registered for the “Time Tunnel” trademark in Europe. So it’s very likely that Time Tunnel was the original name for Time Machine.

Site updates are usually developed on a private network and undergo several changes before they go live. It’s possible that they changed the name at the last minute, but forgot to change the obscure link at the bottom of the page. It’s also possible that the designer had a brain fart and typed the wrong thing. Either way, Time Machine is definitely a better name for this very cool backup and restore program.
